D.C. Council Celebration of Black History in the District
We invite you to join the Council of the District of Columbia for A Celebration of Black History in the District on Friday, February 24, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the First Floor Foyer of the John A. Wilson Building (1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW).
The program will be emceed by Mr. Tony Lewis Jr. and include remarks by Council members, school choir performances, a short artistic presentation by students, and a visual artist display. The program will also include the inaugural presentation of the Black History Month Influential Leader Award by Council members to two youth who have made special contributions to the essence of Black History Month in the District.
Light refreshments will follow the formal program. We hope to see you there!
About the 2017 Black History Month Influential Leader Award
The 2017 Black History Month Influential Leader Award will be presented to two youth who are residents of the District of Columbia, currently enrolled in a District academic program full-time, and below the age of 21. Winners have distinguished themselves as rising peer leaders in their respective communities through excellence in service, academic achievement, creative arts, advocacy, community building, and/or athletic achievement. Their words and actions have also displayed the ideals of Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Negro History Week, as an independent thinker and supporter of African-American history and culture.
